1. Best Humidifier for Large Rooms:  Elechomes UC5501 Ultrasonic Humidifier

Elechomes UC5501 Ultrasonic Humidifier Review:

This large room humidifier uses ultrasonic technology and offers both warm and cool mist.  The warm mist offers added heat in the cold winters without further drying out the air.  The cool mist is perfect for aiding a soothing night of sleep just when you need it most.

The Elechomes UC5501 has a smart sensor built into the humidifier to accurately detect the humidity in the room.  The LED touch display makes identifying current conditions a breeze and allows for easily setting your desired humidity level to something more comfortable.

Added bonuses not found on most large room ultrasonic humidifiers are the aromatherapy and remote control.  Essential oils can be added to the aroma box to supplement the mist with a relaxing aromatherapy!  The remote control is great when you’re already in bed and need to make changes without getting back up.

Noise while you’re sleeping is no concern as the new and improved sleep mode turns the LED screen off while operating at a whisper-quiet 34 dB.

The built-in timer also makes taking control of the humidity easy when you’re not even thinking about it.

All in all, the features and value provided with this uni make it the best humidifier for big rooms.  It also comes in both black or white for color options!

Type: Ultrasonic (Cool & Warm Mist) | Coverage Area: 750 sqft | Tank Capacity: 6L/1.5 Gal | Runtime: Up to 40 Hours | Dimensions:  11.6 x 7.7 x 11 inches | Display: Digital LED

2. Best Large Capacity Ultrasonic Humidifier:  Air Innovations 901D 1.6 Gal Top-Fill Humidifier

Air Innovations 901D Large Capacity Ultrasonic Humidifier Review:

There are a few unique features on the Air Innovations large capacity ultrasonic humidifier that pushed it toward the top of our list.  They include the top fill, the mist extension, and the ultra-large capacity of the holding tank.

If you haven’t already noticed, most of the whole room humidifiers are filled by removing a tank and holding it upside down.  It always seems to be somewhat difficult to turn bit back over while full and not make a mess or chance dropping and breaking the tank.  Filling the tank from above is SOOOO much easier!

Another feature of the Air Innovations MH-901D is a 15″ mist extension that allows you to direct the cool air mist exactly where you need it in the room, many are so short that much of the mist lands on the floor, soaking the carpet.

Another thing we really like about this large room humidifier is the large capacity.  At 1.6 gallons, it’s one of the largest on the list and is able to run for up to 100 hours on the “low” setting.  That’s roughly 13 nights of sleep!

Besides all this it also includes an LED digital display, an anti-microbial infused tank and base, and a fully programmable humidistat and timer.

Type: Ultrasonic (Cool Air Mist) | Coverage Area: 600 sqft | Tank Capacity: 1.6 Gal | Runtime: Up to 100 Hours | Dimensions:  7.8 x 10.4 x 34.1 inches | Display: Digital LED

3. Best Console Humidifier (Whole House):  AIRCARE MA1201 Whole House Evaporative Humidifier

AIRCARE MA1201 Whole House Console Humidifier Review:

This evaporative console humidifier is nice because it has the capacity to produce desirable humidity levels for the whole house very quickly.  If you’re looking for the best bang for your buck, this large home humidifier will product more humidity over a larger area for less than any other on our list.

While the large fan does create noise that you won’t have on an ultrasonic humidifier, it does come with wheels so it can be moved around the house if you don’t want it in your bedroom at night.

Making quick work of getting the humidity levels back to normal will assist with sinus problems, allergies, and relieve dry skin.

Keep in mind as an evaporative humidifier, you’ll need to keep extra filters on hand to replace them as necessary.

Since an ultrasonic wouldn’t be able to handle the job, this is the best humidifier for 1000 square feet or more!

Type: Evaporative | Coverage Area: 3600 sqft | Tank Capacity: 3.6 Gal | Runtime: Up to 36 Hours | Dimensions:  20.5 x 21.5 x 14.5 inches | Display: Digital LED

LEVOIT Ultrasonic Bedroom Humidifier Review:

While it’s not our favorite large room humidifier, it’s not far off.  It is actually very similar to our #1 selection.  It has a digital LED display, remote control, and lots of easy to use settings.

The Levoit LV600HH Hybrid Humidifier also has selectable warm or cool mist and essential oil can be added for your favorite aromatherapy!

It’s a perfect bedroom humidifier.  It operates very quietly, even when running at full capacity.  Similarly, the display can be turned off so it doesn’t bother you in the dark room.  With a 12-hour timer and an smart auto mode, you can walk away or fall asleep without fear of not being there when needed.

This large bedroom humidifier is also easy to clean and refill with it’s large opening.  This is critical in preventing mold and mildew.

Type: Ultrasonic (Cool & Warm Mist) | Coverage Area: 750 sqft | Tank Capacity: 6 L / 1.5 Gal | Runtime: Up to 36 Hours | Dimensions:  11.3 x 7 x 10.5 inches | Display: Digital LED

Everlasting Comfort Ultrasonic Humidifier Review:

This large room ultrasonic humidifier has a lot going for it and has a very affordable price and roughly 1/2 the cost of other, similar sized models on this list.  It includes cool features like an essential oil tray, an automatic shut off, and a blue LED nightlight.

Of course as an ultrasonic humidifier, there are no need for costly filters all the time, however this model is not quite as efficient as others we’ve reviewed.  While it has the tank capacity, it doesn’t cover rooms as large as others do.

The automatic shut off ensures no damage to the humidifier when it runs out of water and you’re not there to notice.

It does sooth dry skin and improve sleep with its quiet operation and essential oil diffuser tray, all with out breaking the bank.  This is an inexpensive option that many have tried and loved.  If you’re a price-conscience buyer, this is the best budget humidifier that will still work in a large bedroom.

Type: Ultrasonic (Cool Mist) | Coverage Area: 400 sqft | Tank Capacity: 6 L / 1.6 Gal | Runtime: Up to 50 Hours | Dimensions:  14.3 x 12.6 x 7.7 inches | Display: Knob/Dial

Air Innovations MH-701BA Humidifier Review:

As funny as this might sound to some, this humidifier is a nice looking design that is more appealing and modern looking than the standard white or black box you have to set in your bedroom.  It comes in a variety of colors and is easy to match your decor.

The MH-701BA by Air Innovations is not just a pretty face in this line-up however.  It has a large capacity of 1.7 gallons and can run for up to 96 hours on a single tank!

It includes a color-matching 15″ mist extension nozzle to create both a table top or floor standing unit.

Even the smart, digital interface looks cool on this humidifier and makes operating it a breeze!  It’s fully programmable with a timer and built-in humidistat so it can maintain whatever humidity level you set.

It also has aromatherapy!

Type: Whole House | Coverage Area: Up to 4000 sqft | Tank Capacity: No Tank | Runtime: No Limit to Runtime | Dimensions:  10.2 x 15.4 x 15.8 inches

7. Top Fill Console Humidifier:  Honeywell HEV685W Console Humidifier

Honeywell Humidifier Review:

This console/evaporative humidifier from Honeywell comes in black or white and works well in large rooms.  It has dual 1.5 gallon tanks to keep it providing humidity for up to 24 hours on the low setting without refilling.

The positives on this model from Honeywell are how easy it is to fill (can be filled from above at the sink or at the humidifier) and to clean.

Don’t forget as an large evaporative humidifier, you will need to purchase Honeywill HC14 replacement filters for this unit.

Great quality by Honeywell!

Type: Evaporative | Coverage Area: Multi-Room | Tank Capacity: 3 Gal | Runtime: Up to 24 hours | Dimensions:  23.2 x 15.3 x 16.4 inches

8. Best Large House Humidifier:  Aprilaire 400 Whole House Humidifier

Aprilaire 400 Whole House Humidifier Review:

Unlike the other units on this list, this big house humidifier from Aprilaire is not a stand-alone small appliance.  It needs to be installed by an HVAC professional and connects to your home’s HVAC system.

This system was designed and manufactured right here in the USA by the inventors of whole home humidifiers, Aprilaire.

It covers up to 4,000 square feet, so it will accommodate even very large homes, adding up to 17 gallons of moisture to the air per day!

This particular model conserves water through a unique process, making it more efficient and better for the environment.

Large Room Humidifier Buying Guide:  How to Choose the Best

With the best large humidifiers listed above, how do you choose?  It’s essential that you first know what size area that you want to humidify.  If it’s your bedroom, make sure to measure both the length and width of the room in order to find the area, which will help you identify the humidifiers that will fit cover your large room.  We’ve included the manufacturer’s coverage area guidelines in each humidifier review above.

After determining which humidifiers are options based on coverage, you’ll want to narrow the rest down based on the following criteria:  humidifier type, user friendliness, and features.

Humidifier Types

There are three major types of humidifiers:  ultrasonic, evaporative, and whole house.  All of them could potentially be used for large rooms.  Each of them come with their own pros and cons which we’ll cover below.  It’s important to understand which type should be used for which application.  They all have a fit somewhere, but can be very inefficient if used in the wrong scenario.  Here’s more info on each type and where they should be used.

Ultrasonic Humidifiers

Ultrasonic humidifiers are the latest technology and the perfect solution for a single room, most often a bedroom or living room.  The ultrasonics on the list above are among some of the largest made, and therefore they not a good option for a whole house.  Typically, they can only cover up to between 400 – 750 square feet in total due to the way the mist is expelled from the humidifier.

In an ultrasonic humidifier, high frequency vibrations create a mist that is dispersed throughout the room.  By adding these water droplets into the surrounding air, it increases the humidity nearby.

There are two large benefits to ultrasonic humidifiers, their noise level and energy efficiency.  Since they don’t have large fans spinning to produce the humidity, they are much more quiet and thus perfect for bedrooms at night than an evaporative humidifier.

Besides not being able to cover an entire house in most cases, the other downside of an ultrasonic is the white dust phenomenon.  There are dried mineral deposits in the form of a white does that can happen due to using tap water in your ultrasonic humidifier.  It can be problematic for some people with allergies, asthma, or sinus problems.  Using distilled water eliminates white dust as there is no mineral content.  You can also greatly reduce white dust using a descaler.

Ultrasonic humidifiers are the best option if trying to humidify a room in your home and the area is not too large for the capacity of an ultrasonic.

evaporative Humidifiers

By contrast, evaporative humidifiers are able to effectively increase the humidity in larger areas than just a large bedroom.  They operate by soaking a wick and pushing air across that wicking material with a fan.  This causes the water to evaporate and pushes it into the air around the humidifier.

In order to keep larger evaporative humidifiers from also sending micro organisms into the air, they use filters that need to be replaced at regular intervals determined by the manufacturer.  While they’re great at covering large areas one gripe on them is the re-occurring filter replacements needed that can really add up over time.

Another complaint against evaproative humidifiers is their noise level.  In order to get the air more humid, you must pass more air across the wick, meaning a more powerful or faster spinning fan.  These tend to be fairly noisy and can be annoying to have in your home, especially if they are where you’re spending time (i.e. in the kitchen around dinner, in the living room when watching television, or in your bedroom when you’re trying to sleep.

Evaporative humidifiers are the best option if the area you need humidified is larger than a single room and you don’t have the desired to add a whole house humidifier and can deal with the noise.

Whole house humidifiers

Whole house humidifiers can be placed on inline with your HVAC system to humidify your home and combat the drying of the air when your furnace is running.  Because they are installed by an HVAC professional and require modification to your existing heating system, these are very popular on new homes or when you’re in the middle of a renovation or furnace replacement.

These are a great long term solution as they are very effective at humidifying a large home.  The upfront cost of having one fitted to your furnace can be relatively expensive, but being able to automatically humidify your home without moving around a console unit or listening to the fan run is great.

The last thing to keep in mind with this type is that they rely on the duct work in your home to deliver the moisture.  This means areas where you might not have vents will not get the benefit of the increased humidity.

Whole house humidifiers are the best solution if you’re building a new home or don’t want to ever mess will filling a humidifier again!

Cool Mist or Warm Mist for Large Room Humidifier?

When looking at humidifiers for large rooms, you’ll undoubtedly see that same are called warm mist and others are called cool mist.  Some like the idea of a warm mist that is created by heating the water into steam.  While it can be relieving for sinus problems and also assist slightly with the heat in the room, it’s also less efficient and potentially unsafe.

The hot steam expelled from a warm mist humidifier could harm anyone, especially children, that comes into direct contact with it by burning their skin.  For these reasons, we recommend that you consider only cool mist humidifiers.

There are hybrid models that have options for both cool mist and warm mist, including our top recommendation above, the Elechomes UC5501.

Considerations for Buying the Best Large Humidifier

Humidifiers are like any other home appliance.  There are many options and types and some are much better than others as it relates to the value a consumer gets from them.  These are the key features to keep in mind when searching for a top large room humidifier.

Coverage Area/Capacity

We know we’re talking about large room humidifiers here, but large is a relative term.  The first thing you should do is measure the amount of area that you need to humidify and then pair that up with the humidifiers that have a large enough capacity to cover that area for an adequate amount of time before refilling.

Humidifier Placement or Location

Next to ensuring it has the capacity to do the work, knowing where you’re going to locate the humidifier is the next most important.  This is going to help you understand what type of humidifier you’ll be happy with.  (More on types above if you skipped past it.)  You’ll want to strongly consider against an evaporative humidifier in your bedroom unless you like the loud noise while you’re sleeping.  Likewise, you might need something that covers more area if you’re going to put it on the other side of the house so it doesn’t bother you.

Ultrasonic Humidifier in Corner of Living Room

While it’s not critical where you place the humidifier, you’ll find that it helps you understand what you need when you know where it’ll be.  Perhaps you’ll find that you don’t have a good place for a large humidifier and you’re better off with a large bedroom humidifier or an entire whole house humidifier.  That’s the reason for this exercise.

Humidistat / Timer / Auto Shut Off

If you’re like us, you like the creature comforts.  Have a humidistat ensures the humidifier is intelligent enough to set it and forget it.  You want to be able to walk away and let it do its thing until it reaches the optimal humidity level.  Likewise, having a timer is also great and an automatic shut off for when it runs out of water is a must.  You don’t want to burn out a components or use electricity for no reason either.

You can also check the humidity remotely using a hygrometer.

Keep in mind if you’re looking at an evaporative humidifier that it will use filters regularly and you should price them out to understand what their total cost will be.  You probably also want to order a few replacements at the time of the humidifier purchase so you know you have them and don’t have to order them after it’s too late!

Ease of Use

Last but not least are the nice-to-haves.  These features include digital LED displays, multiple mist level settings (variable speeds), a remote control, and the essential oils aromatherapy.  Are these things that you want to have in your home?  Now is the time to decide when you’re selecting a humidifier.

We’re not suggesting you buy a cheap humidifier.  In fact, this gets many consumers in trouble when they focus solely on price.  What we are recommending is that you consider the price and value of what you’re getting for your money before you pull the trigger.  We’ve identified humidifiers that provide great value to consumers and are priced competitively on our list.

Online Customer Reviews

We always recommend reading through customer reviews prior to buying anything of value.  We are lucky and fortunate that in this internet age, we have thousands of previous customers that tell us if they were happy, mad, just satisfied, or even disappointed with a purchase.

Our top choice, the Elechomes UC5501, has all of the features mentioned above including strong, positive feedback.  This is exactly why we’ve selected it as the Best Large Room Humidifier!
