SUMMARY
If you are interested in an at home weather station, the 01022M is an affordable choice that includes extras like lightning detection. It’s not he most accurate, but that doesn’t typically matter too much in home weather stations.
The AcuRite 5 in 1 color weather station (01022M) includes a lightning detector. This is a featured offered on a few AcuRite weather stations, but rarely offered with other brands. This lightning detector estimates the distance to lightning strikes and keeps a running total strikes detected. Coupled with the lightning detector is AcuRite’s basic 5-in-1 sensor array.
Connectivity
The 01022M model can transmit data wirelessly up to 330ft from the array to the display console. As purchased, this model will not connect data to a PC or the internet. To gain this functionality, you’ll need the smartHUB unit from AcuRite.

Weather Instruments
This AcuRite model comes with the basic 5-in-1 sensor array and includes the following weather instruments:
- Indoor/Outdoor thermomete – temp
- Indoor/Outdoor hygrometer – humidity
- Barometer – indoor barometric pressure
- Wind vane & anemometer, wind speed & direction
- Self-emptying rain collector – rainfall
- Lightning Detector
.
Uniquely, this weather station provides a lightning detector. It both accumulates the number of strikes and estimates the distance away. Here’s a look at the lightning detector and its features.
Power Source for Weather Instruments
Acurite’s 01022M weather station instruments are battery powered. Note, the solar panel on this unit is for the aspirating fan and does not power the sensors.
Accuracy
Accuracy is not the strength of this unit, but it isn’t that bad either. It’s adequate for most.
- Temperature: ± 2° F
- Humidity: ± 3-5%
- Rain: ± 0.05” per inch
- Wind Direction Indicators: 16 points
- Wind Speed: 2-5 mph
- Lightning Detector: up to 25 miles away
Update Frequency
The small weather resistant lightning monitor updates every 24 seconds during normal conditions. It’s updates increase to every 8 seconds once the lightning detector registers a strike. The update frequency of the weather station itself is 18 second intervals for wind speed and 36 second intervals for both wind direction and temperature to the display.
Affordability
Since this unit is very much a basic weather station model despite the lightning detector, it’s very reasonably priced. Based on the lack of high-end features, it’s more suitable for novice weather watchers.
What Are Actual Users Saying?
It wasn’t surprising for us to find out during our research that most of the users of this weather station model really liked the included lightning detector, mentioning how cool it is that it can detect strikes up to 25 miles away. We heard very few negative comments about this color weather station.

AcuRite Weather Station with Lightning Detector: Summary
Generally speaking, this is a great basic unit. On top of AcuRite’s base model, you’re getting a lightning detector that we just haven’t see offered with other brands. We did review another unit from AcuRite with the lightning detector, the 01024, and one of the big differences between the two is the display console. Although that unit had the high definition display console, it doesn’t have an option for battery backup like this one does. You also have to pay incrementally more for that display. The 01022M was received better by its user base, and in our opinion, is the better buy.
