    PROS

The AcuRite pro weather center probably has the nicest color display of any available.  The pro 5 in 1 means it’s easy to install, and the included lightning detector really is a nice touch.

    CONS

This AcuRite weather center requires additional components if you want to get your weather data to the internet easily.  AcuRite’s 5 in 1 is battery powered and the solar panels do not contibute to powering the senors, just the aspirating fan.  In addition, unfortuantely, the display does not allow for backup batteries, only AC power.

    SUMMARY

This AcuRite pro weather center is an affordable digital weather station that includes some nice features.  If you’re looking for a higher rated weather station?  We recommend checking out the AcuRite 01057RM remote monitoring weather station that connects wirelessly to your home network.

The Acurite pro weather center (01024) offers lightning detection.  Lightning detection is an additional feature not found of most units on our list.  There is a lightning strike counter that displays the total strikes detected.  Additionally, an estimated distance to the lightning-producing storm is provided.  This model use the PRO+ 5-in-1 wireless weather sensor to gather readings as do several of the other AcuRite models.  Here’s a quick feature-rich highlight video from AcuRite on the 01024.

    Connectivity

AcuRite’s 01024 is a wireless weather station and can transmit data from the weather instrument to the display console up to 330ft.  Unfortunately, this package does not come with any way to upload the data to the internet or a PC out of the box.  AcuRite’s smartHUB can be purchased separately for this functionality.

    Power Source for Weather Instruments

The Acurite pro weather center has a battery powered sensor array.  Note, the solar panels on this unit are for the aspirating fan and do not power the sensors.

    Weather Instruments

Most of AcuRite’s personal weather stations come with a 3-in-1, 5-in-1, or PRO+ 5-in-1 sensor.  Of course, as mentioned above, this AcuRite pro weather center comes with the PRO+ model and includes the following weather instruments:

    • Indoor/Outdoor thermometer for temperature
    • Indoor/Outdoor hygrometer for humidity
    • Barometer for indoor barometric pressure
    • Wind vane and anemometer for wind speed and direction
    • Self-emptying rain collector to measure rainfall
    • Lightning Detection

Most notably, this unit is one of the few weather station reviews we’ve done that included lightning detection.  The detector can sense lighting strikes up to 25 miles away and provides light and audible alarm notifications.  In addition, it counts the strikes and estimates the distance away.  The sensor is weather resistant and compact.

The dual solar panels power an internal aspirating fan to draw in ambient air for an accurate measurement.

    Display Console

The display console included with this this personal weather station is both the best, and worst, in-class per its user base.  On one hand, the vivid High-Definition color display is one of the nicest consoles included on our weather station reviews.  At the same time though, it has one major flaw in the eyes of most reviewers.  It’s powered by an AC adapter and there is no battery backup.  This means when you might need it the most, the display is no viewable if the power goes out.

    Accuracy

This home weather station is slightly less accurate than most we’ve reviewed.  All things considered, its typically accurate enough for most amateur weather watchers.  Here are the stats:

    • Temperature: ± 2° F
    • Humidity: ± 3-5%
    • Rain: ± 0.05” per inch
    • Wind Direction Indicators: 16 points
    • Wind Speed: 2-5 mph
    • Lightning Detection: up to 25 miles away

    Update Frequency

The 5-in-1 sensor is towards the slower side in comparison to other models we’ve reviewed.  The 01024 Pro’s update frequency comes with 18 second intervals for wind speed and 36 second intervals for both wind direction and temperature to the display.  As a rule, the lightning detector transmits data every 24 seconds during normal conditions and every 8 seconds once lightning is detected.

    Affordability

This AcuRite pro weather center has all of the basic weather instruments you expect, plus a lightning detector.  It also comes at a relatively affordable price and one of the coolest HD displays available on any home weather station.  Unfortunately, its accuracy and update frequency are lacking as a result of the lower price point, however those things aren’t important for everyone.  If you’re just looking for a basic unit with lightning detection that’s not overly expensive, you’re the target audience of this model.

    What Are Actual Users Saying?

Actual users of this product have provided feedback with high marks on the HD display console, commenting specifically on it’s brightness or crisp colors.  Yet others have mentioned they are very happy and would recommend this model to a friend.  On the other hand, many mentioned to us about the lack of battery options on the display console, saying that it wasn’t available when they needed it most.

AcuRite Pro Weather Center Review:  Summary

In conclusion, we’ve gone through the ups and downs in this AcuRite 01024 review.  It includes basic weather instruments, plus the lightning detection module that’s not included with most home weather stations.  A very cool HD display rounds out a very nice package, ensuring it’s spot on our Best Digital Weather Station list.  However, at this lower price point, you’ll have to accept the slower update frequency and slightly lower accuracy than other models reviewed.  In addition, there is one major flaw; the display only runs on AC power.  Since weather stations are often most needed during bad storms, power outages will render it useless in most cases.  Ultimately, this won’t be a problem for you if you have a backup generator or some other way to provide AC power to this unit during an outage.  If this bothers you, we recommend checking out AcuRite’s 01057RM that has battery back-up in its display console.
