    PROS

The Ambient Weather WS-1401-IP includes UV and Solar Radiation sensors in addition to all of the basic weather instruments.  It is also easy to set up since it’s an all-in-one unit.  Additionally, the Observer series models include solar powered sensors and several connectivity options.

    CONS

The model does NOT include a display console.  Similar to the other Ambient units, the WS-1401-IP should not be used in the Arctic Circle or in a salt water environment.  It also can lose wireless connectivity during poor weather conditions.

    SUMMARY

The WS-1401-IP includes lots of features for the money if you don’t require a display console for viewing the data.  We personally like the idea of having a local display and recommend looking at Ambient’s WS-1002-WIFI for a similar model that includes a nice one.

The Ambient  Weather WS-1401-IP Observer is the solar powered home weather station with wireless connectivity from the weather instruments to the ObserverIP module (weather sensor).  Note, this is basically the same unit as the WS-1201-IP, but without the display console.  For this reason, if you’re interested in having a display come with the unit, don’t waste your time reading this weather station review.  There are other Ambient Weather models that do include a display.  On the other hand, if you don’t require the display console, this unit is much more affordable without it, so you should keep reading.

As is the case in each current Ambient home weather station from the Observer series, the WS-1401-IP uses a super capacitor for energy storage.  It’s charged by a solar collector during the day and non-rechargeable batteries at night.  This is a vast performance improvement over the recently used rechargeable batteries alone that were charged by the solar collector.

    Connectivity

The WS-1401-IP connects wirelessly from the all-in-one weather station to the ObserverIP.  As you can see in the diagram below, the array is still has wireless connectivity back to your base station.  This base station MUST be nearby your household’s router as it needs to be connected with an Ethernet cable.

Like other Ambient weather stations, the spec shows a maximum wireless transmission length of 300ft. Their website does say right behind that statement that under most conditions, you’ll achieve a distance closer to 100ft.

Despite not having a display console, this weather station for home use is pretty versatile in its connectivity.  It is capable of connecting to the internet, and therefore both the AmbientWeather.net and Weather Underground networks.  Note, the Ambient site is basically a private network where you can view a personal weather data dashboard.  It an show weather trends over time using your stored data.  By contrast, Weather Underground (Wunderground) shares your data with the world.  It’s a great place for storing, analyzing, and viewing your home weather station data.

A couple other unique features included with this weather station is its ability to connect to Alexa and its inclusion of IFTTT.  Alexa is Amazon’s voice control system.  With a smart-home hub, you can ask Alexa for the weather from the outdoor thermometer or for the inside digital hygrometer, among other things.  IFTTT is included to connect to web services such as Facebook, Gmail, Pinterest, and Instagram.

If you’re thinking about using an HD weather camera, you’re in luck.  The WS-1401-IP home weather station is compatible with the AmbientCamHD (sold separately).  It can integrate directly to the Weather underground webcam hosting services.

    Ambient Weather Display

Note, there is no display console with this unit.  Your weather data can be viewed remotely via AmbientWeather.net or Weather Underground if you’re connected and uploading to that page or weather app.

    .

Note, solar radiation and UV sensors are optional add-ons that you pay extra for with many other brands.

    Power Source for Weather Instruments

This soloar powered weather station includes a solar powered array, with a super capacitor for energy storage, and non-rechargeable batteries for night time.

    Accuracy

The WS-1401 is pretty average in this category.  Here are the stats:

    • Temperature: ± 2° F
    • Humidity: ± 5%
    • Barometric Pressure: ±0.08 inHG
    • Rain: ± 10%
    • Wind Direction: ± 1°
    • Wind Speed: 2 mph
    • UV ± 1
    • Solar Radiation: ± 15%

    Update Frequency

Update frequency is middle of the road on this weather station for home.  It’s weather instruments update data every 14 seconds, which is better than some models, but not on par with the top weather stations.

    Affordability

Take a look around at the other weather station reviews on this site.  It should be clear that this is best weather station for you if you’re interests lie with getting the most weather instruments for your money.  There is no other option that includes these sensors at this price point at the time of this writing.  However, this means you also won’t get a display console.  If this is a deal breaker, you won’t see the value in this model.

    Ambient Weather WS-1401-IP:  Summary

If you’re looking for the most weather measurements for your money, then the WS-1401-IP is the best weather station for you.  Note, this comes at a cost however as there is no display console included.  Your data can be logged through other pages/apps such as AmbientWeather.net or Wunderground and viewed there.  And, as long as that’s ok with you, this unit is a great value.  We like the idea of having a local display and thus recommend checking out Ambient’s WS-1002-WIFI.  It has most of the same great features, but includes a nice display console with it.
